Coral reefs are some of the world’s most threatened ecosystems, with studies warning that if current trends continue, the world’s reefs could be gone by 2030.

Researchers at the University of the Philippines Diliman are currently studying the conservation status and functioning of coastal ecosystems around Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao which have been exploited or degraded. The project ultimately aims to ensure that local communities have sufficient knowledge and understanding of these ecosystems so that they can manage them sustainably well into the future.
